EnaResearch
Participant app

For iPhone and Android phones

The health data a study needs, with the participant’s permission

The EnaResearch apps for iOS and Android read only the metrics a study selects from Apple Health (HealthKit) or Health Connect on the participant’s phone, with the participant’s operating system permissions, and send them to the organization’s own EnaResearch environment. Participants do not create accounts; they activate the app with an activation card from the researcher.

The apps are built; App Store and Google Play release and real-device acceptance testing are in progress. They will be announced on this page once published.

  • iOS: Apple Health (HealthKit)

Data written to Apple Health by Apple Watch and other sources is read with the HealthKit permissions the participant grants.

    • iPhone with iOS 17 or later
    • Permission is asked only for the study’s metrics
    • Hourly background delivery
  • Android: Health Connect

Data from apps and devices that write to Health Connect is read; Samsung Health data arrives only if it is written to Health Connect.

    • Android 9 or later
    • Health Connect permissions are granted in the app
    • Huawei Health is out of scope
Consent and scope

Only permitted data, and only what the study selects

The research team decides which metrics a study collects in its protocol; the participant decides which data may be read on the phone’s permission screen. The app collects where the two overlap.

Activation

No accounts: an activation card and a code

Participants do not sign up with an email and password. The researcher prints a personal activation card from the admin panel; it carries a QR code, the organization code, the 6-character participant code and the activation key, and no identity details.

  1. 1

    Get the card

The research team hands the activation card to the participant. The key on the card is single-use and valid for 14 days.

  2. 2

    Activate the app

Scan the QR code on the card in the app, or enter the codes manually. On first activation you choose a 6-digit PIN.

  3. 3

    Grant permissions

On the Apple Health or Health Connect permission screen, allow the metrics the study asks for. Data then starts to send in the background.

Frequently asked questions

When will the apps be in the stores?
The iOS and Android apps are built; store release and real-device acceptance testing are in progress. We do not give dates; the apps will be announced on this page once they are published on the App Store and Google Play.
Do participants need an account?
No. Participants activate the app with the activation card from the researcher. No email, password or identity provider account is needed.
Does the app read all the health data on my phone?
No. It asks for permission only for the metrics the study selects, and reads only the data you allow. You can withdraw permissions in your phone’s settings at any time.
Is data lost if the phone goes offline?
The app keeps data on the phone and sends it when the connection returns. The copy on the phone is not deleted until the server confirms it has stored the data durably.
Does the app send notifications?
No. Participants do not receive automatic notifications.
Is the app a medical device?
No. EnaResearch is a research data platform; it is not a medical device, a clinical decision-support system or a real-time patient monitoring system, and it raises no alarms.
What happens to my data if I withdraw?
The withdrawal is reported to the research team; the team records whether the participation’s data is kept or deleted, and that choice is written to the audit trail. For questions and personal data requests, contact the organization running the study first; it is the data controller.
