Read before and after surgery on one timeline

In perioperative recovery studies, EnaResearch puts surgery, hospital stay and complication records on the same timeline as the participant’s device data and manually entered measurements. Datasets are aligned to the day of surgery or admission: day 0 is the day of the anchor event.

Clinical course records

Stays, surgery, procedures and complications are recorded per participation; every correction leaves a revision with a reason.

Event-anchored window

A dataset window is defined around surgery or admission, for example 7 days before to 30 days after.

Cohort view

The study dashboard shows the daily median and quartiles of a metric around the anchor event; days with fewer than 5 participants are hidden.

Common challenges

  • Surgery dates, length of stay and complications live in another system; lining them up with device data is manual work.
  • Every participant has surgery on a different date, so data pulled by calendar date cannot be compared.
  • When a wrong admission date is corrected, it is no longer clear which data an earlier analysis used.
  • Pain, fatigue and lab values stay on paper or in spreadsheets.

Data kept together

  • Hospital stay: admission and discharge
  • Surgery, procedures, intensive care
  • Complications and Clavien–Dindo grade
  • Pain and fatigue (NRS 0–10), Borg (6–20)
  • Hemoglobin, CRP, leukocytes, creatinine, albumin
  • Steps, active energy, heart rate, sleep (via the phone app)

Clinical context and device data together

Hospital stays are entered with admission and discharge dates, and clinical events with their type, start and end, in the participant panel, or imported from CSV or a FHIR R4 file. Complications can be graded with the Clavien–Dindo classification and linked to the surgery they relate to.

Apple Health or Health Connect data from the phone joins the same participation’s timeline. The participant apps are built and await store release, so the device data feature is marked “in development” on this site. Manually entered pain, fatigue and lab values can be used today.

Aligning to the day of surgery

Every participant has surgery on a different date. In a dataset definition the window can be chosen around an anchor event instead of calendar dates: day 0 is the day of surgery or admission. All participants are then compared over the same relative window, such as “7 days before to 30 days after surgery”.

The cohort view on the study dashboard shows the group median and quartiles of a chosen metric for each day before and after the anchor event. To keep individual data from showing, a day is hidden when fewer than 5 participants have data for it.

  • 7 days before / 30 days after
  • 14 days before / 90 days after
  • 30 days before / 180 days after

Corrections do not break analyses

A record entered by mistake is not deleted; it is marked as entered in error with a reason. Exports and variables read records as they were at the data cut-off: a correction made after the cut-off does not change a file regenerated with the same cut-off.

Variables such as length of stay or the mean heart rate over the 3 days before surgery are versioned; a value that cannot be computed is never written as zero but left empty with a reason.

Frequently asked questions

Does EnaResearch replace the hospital information system?
No. Clinical records are for research; treatment and care records stay in the organization’s hospital information system or electronic health record.
Can we monitor patients after surgery in real time?
No. EnaResearch is not a medical device or patient monitoring system, raises no alarms and should not be used for clinical decisions.
Can it be used without device data?
Yes. Clinical records, manual measurements, variables, analyses and datasets are available today; the phone apps await store release.
