EnaResearch is business software that organizations use to run research studies and collect research data. This statement explains who the product is designed for, whether minors can take part in studies run with it, who is responsible for that decision, what content and features the participant surfaces contain, and the facts behind the app store age rating.

Owner and researcher accounts are for the organization's staff and are not intended for minors.

3. Can minors take part in studies?

EnaResearch does not restrict participants by age. The research team records a participant's date of birth (to the day or, if the organization chooses, to the year only). The product does not set a minimum age, does not ask participants for their age in the app and does not verify age. Whether a study includes minors is therefore decided by the organization running the study, within its protocol and ethics approval.

If a study includes minors, the organization, as data controller, is responsible in particular for:

  • the ethics committee or other approval for research with minors that applies to the study;
  • the legal basis for processing the minor's data, including health data, under the law that applies to it (for example KVKK in Türkiye, the GDPR in the EEA, the UK GDPR, the Swiss FADP);
  • consent or permission of the parent or legal guardian, and the minor's own assent where required, and keeping records of them; the organization sets the age thresholds and the parental consent and assent procedure for each study and country;
  • information notices written in language the minor can understand, as well as for the parent or guardian (Participant Information Notice Template is only a starting point and is written for adults);
  • deciding who receives and keeps the activation card and PIN, and on whose phone the app is activated; the organization decides whether the app may be used on a phone that belongs to the minor or to the parent or guardian;
  • deciding which measurement types are appropriate for a minor; sensitive types (for example reproductive health or sexual activity) must not be enabled for minors unless the protocol, the ethics approval and the law expressly allow it;
  • responding to requests from the minor or the parent or guardian (see Data Subject Requests).

ENA Innovation processes the data as data processor on the organization's instructions and does not decide on any of these points. The Acceptable Use Policy requires the organization to have the approvals and legal basis in place before collecting data.

4. Content of the participant surfaces

The mobile app and the participant web area consist of activation, PIN entry, health data permission screens, transfer status and a daily summary of the participant's own data. Content provided by the product contains:

  • no violence, horror or frightening elements;
  • no sexual content or nudity; where a study allows reproductive health or sexual activity measurement types, the app names these types on the permission screen but shows no sexual content;
  • no profanity, crude humor or discriminatory language;
  • no references to alcohol, tobacco or drugs;
  • no gambling, games of chance, loot boxes or contests.

Study texts that organizations write are the organization's responsibility.

5. Interaction between users

  • Participants cannot send messages to each other or to researchers through the app, and there is no public profile, sharing or chat.
  • Participants do not see other participants' data.
  • The data a participant sends goes only to the organization's own Customer Environment.

7. App store age rating

The app stores set the official age rating from questionnaires ENA Innovation completes: Apple's age rating questionnaire on the App Store and the IARC questionnaire on Google Play. The rating that applies is shown on the store listing once the app is published. The App Store submission is prepared with a 4+ rating. An age rating describes the app's content; it does not mean that the app is designed for children or that a study is suitable for them.
