Study lifecycle

The seven statuses of an EnaResearch study from draft to closed, what each allows, recruitment, and how dates move a study forward automatically.

Applies to:
  • Admin panel
Last updated: Verified with EnaResearch 0.15.0

Every EnaResearch study goes through a fixed lifecycle: it is written as a draft, approved by an owner, collects data between its start and end dates, then closes after a late-data window. The status decides whether participants can be enrolled and whether data is accepted.

Required role

  • The PI submits, withdraws, opens and closes recruitment and ends the study.
  • An owner approves, requests changes and can end the study.

Automatic transitions

Dates move a study forward on their own, by the organization's time zone:

  • At the start of the start day, a scheduled study becomes Active.
  • At the end of the planned end day, an active study enters Closing; active participations are completed at the end.
  • When the late data window after the end has passed, the study becomes Closed.

The banner on the Protocol page always says what the current status means, for example "Closing period: no new data is accepted; late data from before the end is accepted until …".

Recruitment

Recruitment is separate from the study status. It can be open only while the study is Scheduled or Active. Approval opens recruitment. The PI uses Actions → Close recruitment or Open recruitment. When recruitment is closed, no new participants can be enrolled, but enrolled participants continue and their data is still collected.

The study list shows a recruitment badge for each study: Open, Closed or Not available (not started or ended).

Study list

My studies (owners: Studies) lists the studies with their status, PI, plan and timing hints such as "12 days left" or "Awaiting approval · 3 days". Search by title, protocol no or code. Owners can switch between All and Mine, and filter Awaiting my approval.
