Quick start

The path from a new EnaResearch organization to the first participant sending data - users, a study, approval, enrollment, activation and the first dataset.

Applies to:
  • Admin panel
  • Participant app
Last updated: Verified with EnaResearch 0.15.0

EnaResearch collects health data from participants' phones and wearables for research studies, organizes it by study protocol and turns it into datasets and analyses. This guide lists the steps from a new organization to the first participant whose data arrives, in the order you usually take them.

Required role

  • Inviting users, approving studies and changing organization settings need the Owner role.
  • Creating a study, enrolling participants and exporting data are open to the Researcher and Owner roles, within the studies whose team they are on.
  • A participant needs an iPhone (iOS 17 or later) or an Android phone (Android 9 or later).

Step by step

Check the organization settings

An owner opens System management and checks the organization name, short name and logos (Organization identity), and the language, time zone and country (Regional settings). The time zone sets day boundaries for study dates, reports and exports. If your organization matches people by an identifier such as a hospital record number, choose it under Person identifier before you enroll anyone. See System management and Person identifier.

Invite researchers

Go to Users → Add user, enter the person's email, choose the Researcher or Owner role and send the invitation. The invitation link is valid for 7 days. See Inviting users.

Create a study

A researcher (or an owner) opens My studies (owners: Studies) → New study. The wizard asks for the title and description, the measurement types to collect, the schedule, the retention period and the team. Whoever creates the draft becomes the principal investigator (PI). See Creating a study.

Submit for approval

When the required items are complete, the PI clicks Submit for approval. An owner reviews the study and approves it or requests changes. On approval the study is scheduled or starts at once, and recruitment opens. See Approvals and change requests.

Enroll a participant

In the study, open Participants → Add participant. EnaResearch first looks for the person in the organization's records and asks you to confirm any match. The participant is shown in the study under a pseudonym such as P001. See Adding participants.

Give the participant an activation card

Open the participant's row menu → Participant access → Grant access. Print the activation card or hand over the participant code and activation key. The key is shown only once and is valid for 14 days. See Activation cards and participant access.

The participant activates the app

The participant installs the EnaResearch app, scans the card, chooses a 6-digit PIN and allows access to Apple Health or Health Connect. From then on the app sends the study's data in the background. See Activating the app.

Watch data arrive and export

The study Dashboard, Participants and Data quality pages show which participants send data. When you are ready, define variables and a dataset and export it. See Data flow and Exports.

Mobile apps

The iOS and Android participant apps are coming soon to the App Store and Google Play. Until they are listed, your EnaResearch contact tells you how participants can install the app.
