Roles and permissions
EnaResearch has two organization roles, Owner and Researcher, and two study roles, principal investigator and co-investigator. See who can do what.
- Admin panel
Access in EnaResearch works on two levels. The organization role (Owner or Researcher) decides which menus and actions you have in the admin panel. The study team decides which studies you can work in: participants and data of a study are open only to that study's team, whatever your organization role.
Required role
- Only an Owner assigns organization roles (Users → Edit roles).
- The study team is managed by the study's principal investigator (PI). See Study team.
Organization roles
| Role | What it can do |
|---|---|
| Owner | Approves studies, date and protocol changes; manages users and organization settings; reads the audit log. Can do everything a researcher can. |
| Researcher | Creates studies; manages the studies on their team and their participants. |
Permissions by role
To see the same table in the panel, go to Users → Roles & permissions.
| Permission | Owner | Researcher |
|---|---|---|
| Approve studies, date and protocol changes | Yes | No |
| Create draft studies (as principal investigator) | Yes | Yes |
| View assigned studies | Yes | Yes |
| Manage participants | Yes | Yes |
| Manage devices and sources | Yes | Yes |
| View measurement data | Yes | Yes |
| Exports | Yes | Yes |
| Organization identity and regional settings | Yes | No |
| Integrations | Yes | No |
| License | Yes | No |
| Software support | Yes | No |
| Maintenance | Yes | No |
| Users | Yes | No |
| Records (audit log) | Yes | No |
Role contents are fixed; you change what someone can do by giving them a different role. A role change takes effect after the person signs out and signs in again.
Study roles
| Study role | Who | What it can do |
|---|---|---|
| PI (principal investigator) | Whoever created the draft, or the person the PI role was transferred to | Edits the study, submits it for approval, opens and closes recruitment, adds and removes co-investigators, transfers the PI role, requests changes after approval, ends the study |
| Co-I (co-investigator) | Team members added by the PI | Works with participants and data: enrollment, access, clinical records, manual measurements, variables, datasets and analyses. Can leave the team |
Participant and data actions are open to the team only, owners included: an owner who is on a study's team has the rights of their study role there.
What an owner sees outside the team
An owner who is not on a study's team has a governance role in that study. They:
- see the protocol, the team, the history and study-level counts (participants and records),
- approve the study or request changes, decide change requests and can end the study early with a reason.
They do not see participants, measurement data, variables, datasets or analyses, and cannot edit the study or its team. Another team's draft is not visible to them until it is submitted for approval. If a study has no PI who is still a member of the organization, an owner can manage its team and assign a PI.
One study's data stays in that study
Even when the same person takes part in two studies, each study sees only the data from its own participation period and its permitted measurement types. Data is not shared between studies.
