Android and Health Connect
How the EnaResearch Android app reads Health Connect data: installing Health Connect, granting access including background reading, and changing it later.
- Participant app· Android
On Android, EnaResearch reads health data through Health Connect, Android's shared health data store. Data from your watch, fitness band and other health apps that write to Health Connect can be included, but only for the data types your study asks for. The app needs Android 9 or later.
Health Connect must be available
- On Android 14 and later, Health Connect is part of the system.
- On Android 13 and earlier, Health Connect is a separate app. If it is missing or outdated, the app shows "Your study collects data through Health Connect. Install or update Health Connect to continue." Tap Install Health Connect, then return to EnaResearch.
- If Health Connect cannot be used on your phone, the app says so and no health data can be sent.
Allow access
After activation, the app explains How EnaResearch uses your data: it reads only the data types your study asks for and sends them to your research team under your participant code; your name is not sent. Tap Allow access and grant the permissions in Health Connect.
- Allow reading in the background, too. Without it, the app can send data only while it is open.
- If your study asks for data from before you joined and that is older than 30 days, Health Connect asks for access to past data separately.
- Sensitive types (for example menstrual cycle or sexual activity) are requested only if your study asks for them.
If access is missing later, the home screen shows "EnaResearch needs permission to read the health data your study collects, also in the background." with Allow access.
You can withdraw access at any time in Health Connect, or disconnect the phone in the app.
Background sending
The app sends data about every hour in the background, when you open it and when you tap Send now. Battery-saving settings on some phones may delay background work; opening the app sends what is waiting.
