iPhone and Apple Health
How the EnaResearch iPhone app reads data from Apple Health, which permissions it asks for, how background sending works and how to change access later.
- Participant app· iOS
On iPhone, EnaResearch reads health data from Apple Health (HealthKit). Data from your Apple Watch and other apps that write to Apple Health can be included, but only for the data types your study asks for. The app needs iOS 17 or later and runs on iPhone only.
Allow access to health data
After activation, iOS shows the Apple Health permission screen. It lists the data types your study needs; the message reads "EnaResearch reads the health data that your study needs and sends it to your research team."
- Allow the types listed. If you turn a type off, that data is not sent, and your research team may see gaps.
- If your study asks for data from before you joined, iOS may limit the history it shares to 30 days.
You can change these permissions later in the Health settings for EnaResearch on your iPhone.
Camera
The camera is used only to scan the QR code on your activation card.
Background sending
Apple Health wakes the app when new data arrives, about once an hour, and the app sends it. The app also sends when you open it and when you tap Send now. Pull down on the home screen to refresh.
Good to know
- The data waiting to be sent is not included in iCloud or computer backups of your iPhone.
- If you delete and reinstall the app, the old connection is removed; you need a new activation card.
- The app does not write anything to Apple Health.
